North-East England. The North-East of England (see map below) is associated traditionally with mining, shipbuilding and other heavy industries. However, the north-easterners are 'canny', and have hidden away a number of pearls and gems. Take, for example, the Northumbrian coast with its rugged scenery and beautiful beaches.   The library has more than 4m maps in its collection but the exhibition will feature and will aim to tell, for the first time, the history of the 20th century through maps.

From a Tardis-like ventilation shaft in the middle of Newcastle, to a Space Age sculpture unveiled in the same year that Britain’s first satellite was launched and a poignant reminder of a mining disaster which tore apart a community, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport has today listed 5 pieces of post-war public sculpture in the North East of England on the advice of Historic England. Scotland. 'Maps for a Small Country' ('An exhibition of historical maps and atlases of Scotland, held in Glasgow University Library, June - August ', illustrated with enlargeable details - by John N. Moore, adapted for the web in by Sarah Hepworth) {November, } Scotland.
